Doctors Warn Gluten-free alternative Lupin could cause allergic reactions

Health specialists are warning that food manufacturers could be substituting one allergen for another.

The increasingly popular Lupin ingredient used in some gluten-free foods including some gluten-free pasta may cause a deadly allergic reaction.

Food safety specialists say consumers with nut and soybean allergies need to be cautious because Lupin is a legume that comes from the same plant family as the peanut.

Lupin is showing up in more gluten-free products and is currently required to be listed on food products as a potential allergen in Europe, but is currently only required to be listed as an ingredient in the USA and not labeled as an allergen in Australia.
