Food Allergen Recalls Are On The Rise

What is the most common reason for food recalls in the U.S? The answer might surprise you.

It isn’t for salmonella, listeria or other pathogens.

Instead, it’s for undeclared food allergens that accidentally get into foods because of manufacturing errors and recalls of this type are on the rise in the U.S.  According to government researchers, between 2005 and 2010, there were 1,637 food recalls in the U.S., including 520 for undeclared allergens, which accounted for 31 percent. Last year, however, undeclared allergens accounted for 44 percent of the recalls.

Undeclared allergens are a major source of concern for food allergy sufferers who must avoid the particular allergen in order to stay safe. Current statistics show that every three minutes, someone is being taken to the emergency room for a food allergy reaction.
