Time for the food industry to wake up to food allergies

Isn’t it time for the food industry to wake up to the dangers of food allergies?
How many times have you gone to a restaurant with your family, politely informing the waiter or waitress of your concerns for a food allergy reaction only to be met with a blank stare or a roll of the eyes?
New York Councilman David Greenfield has proposed legislation that would require all New York City restaurants and catering halls to put up posters letting customers know if they use ingredients in foods that trigger allergic reactions. We salute Mr. Greenfield on this great idea, especially considering the amount of people who now live with allergies.
Unfortunately, but not surprisingly, his proposal was met with what we have found to be a typical reaction from those who are not dealing with these medical conditions or those trying to protect children from serious or even fatal reactions.
Andrew Moesel, spokesman for the New York State Restaurant Association, says his members are not open to another piece of legislation;
“Every day restaurants in NYC are concerned about what’s coming down the pipe next,” Moesel said. “Is it going to be salt? Is it going to be butter? Now we have to worry about putting up signs for allergies. By and large people are not getting sick in NYC restaurants, and legislation like this only makes people worry about a problem that really doesn’t exist?’
A problem that ‘doesn’t exist’?
We believe there simply isn’t enough education or awareness within the food industry about food allergies and that it should be mandatory that all involved should be educated on the matter so that they can make more informed decisions.
