The Need For Airlines To Come On Board With Food Allergies

Food allergies can be a frightening medical condition and there is no cure; the only method of protection is total avoidance of the allergen(s) in question.

Each allergy is unique to an individual and can vary in form and severity, producing contrasting allergic reactions from one person to another. Some people’s allergies are so severe they can have a reaction just by touching a surface which previously had the allergen on it.

This is the primary reason that air travel presents such a dilemma for food allergy sufferers.

Next month Swiss International Airlines Ltd., (SWISS), will introduce a number of ground/ inflight products designed to enhance the air travel experience for allergy sufferers becoming the world’s first certified allergy friendly airline.

Frank Maier, SWISS’s Head of Product & Services: “We have seen a steady increase over the past few years in our customers’ need for an air travel environment that pays due regard to any allergic conditions. So we’ve been working with ECARF (the European Centre for Allergy Research Foundation) to provide a concrete response to these demands to make everyone’s air travel experience as pleasant and problem-free as possible.”

This move by Swiss international airlines is very positive step in the right direction and should hopefully lead the way for other airlines to take food allergies seriously and to address the safety of all passengers.
